How to Prime Galvanized Steel

Galvanized metal resists corrosion and rusting, and is used in many outdoor situations. It is long-lasting, so it will withstand many years of use and abuse. However, a galvanized finish is basically unattractive, so you might wish to paint galvanized metal to improve its appearance. In order to do so, you must prime it well first with a high-quality primer. Rust-Oleum products are great for this type of project.

Strip the surface of the galvanized steel to remove all dirt, oil, grease, grime, and other contaminants with a cleaner/degreaser. Many household products will work. Allow the steel to dry completely.

Apply a thick coat of Rust-Oleum metal primer with a brush, a paint sprayer, or a spray can. The size of the project will determine the best application method. Do not allow any drips or runs to form. If spraying the primer, touch up any drips or runs with a brush.

Allow the primer to dry. For best results, you may need to apply two coats of primer. Primer must dry according to the application instructions on the package before covering with a coat of Rust-Oleum metal paint.
