Types of Countertop Materials

The type of countertop material drastically affects a kitchen's appearance. Some materials are also more durable or stain-resistant than others. High-end countertops made from marble or granite are more expensive than a commonly available material like wood or stone.

Wood

Wood countertops, also called butcher block, resist stains and burns. Their susceptibility to water damage and tendency to show knife marks are the main disadvantages to wooden counters.

Limestone

Limestone slabs are thicker than other types of countertop materials, giving the kitchen a natural appearance. The stone is porous, so it will absorb stains unless it is sealed frequently.

Soapstone

Soapstone countertops are durable and will last for decades with proper maintenance. They should not be cleaned with harsh cleaners or abrasive scouring pads.

Marble

Marble is the smoothest countertop material, but is not as durable as other types. Apply sealant periodically to prevent the marble from becoming stained.

Granite

Granite countertops give your kitchen a sleek, modern look. They are resistant to nicks and scratches from knife cuts. Hot pots can be set directly on a granite counter without causing damage.
