What Is the Definition of Contemporary Design?

What Is the Definition of Contemporary Design?

Contemporary design or modern design relies on clean lines, smooth and polished surfaces, and few intricate details. It is not stark and cold, but contemporary design is comfortable and spacious, without clutter.

Color

Contemporary design focuses on neutral colors, such as creams, whites, browns, blacks and taupe. Bold colors, such as red or yellow, are for accent.

Texture

Silk, velvet, linen and wool warm the sleek lines of contemporary design. They are used in pillows and bed covers.

Metal & Accent

Stainless steel, chrome and nickel are the usual choices for lamps, hardware and appliances. Black is a popular accent found on the metal.

Furniture

Wood furniture is light or dark. Upholstered furniture is comfortable, but not bulky. Leather is a popular choice for sofas.

Lighting

Contemporary design relies on lighting to accent walls or artwork. Track lighting and floor lamps are common choices.
