How to Design Your Dream Room

Do you have an image of a perfect room in your mind that you would love to make a reality? Designing and decorating your own room can be a fun task that is also rewarding. In order to design your dream room on your own, you would need to understand and implement the principles of design and apply them in your room.

Instructions

    1

Understand the principles of design. When these are used together, they can create effective designs. Some main principles of design include the following:
    1. Scale and proportion - This deals with the relationship between various sizes. For example, the size of a bookshelf in a room would be relative to the height of the room and the space it is to occupy.
    2. Balance - This is very important in the visual consideration of a room. Symmetry is easier to work with as it gives you a rule to follow. Asymmetry can create much interest, if used correctly. Do not focus undue attention to any corner of the room as this will create a visual imbalance.
    3. Rhythm - To give any room a united outlook, you would need to repeat a few items throughout the room with, perhaps, a few variations. This links all the items belonging in the room together.
    4. Emphasis - In order to give the room a visual focus, it is important to create an emphasis without ruining the balance. The best way to achieve the visual emphasis is through contrast, whether in size, shape, color or position.
    5. Harmony - Harmonize your room with the use of elements with a common trait through color, pattern, texture or shape.

Use the basic principles as a base in your design. An easy way to design your room is online at DesignMyRoom.com (see Resources).

    3

Click on "Start New Project" from the toolbar at the top. You can opt to take the tour or to become a member and begin.

    4

Select the room from the left and choose the picture that most resembles your room, or you can upload a picture of your room.

    5

Choose items to add to your room once your design board has loaded. You can choose items to add to your room from the "Products" tab and look for ideas from the "Inspiration" tab. Fill your room using the principles of design and see how it looks at each stage.
