How to Arrange Items on Top of Kitchen Cabinets

How to Arrange Items on Top of Kitchen Cabinets

The space above kitchen cabinets is frequently wasted space. Utilize the space and display some of your collectibles or favorite antique items. Match the dcor of your kitchen or home dcor scheme. Remember it's not necessary to clutter the entire area. Instead, space objects and leave a little open room to add items as you find something matching your dcor scheme.

Instructions

    1

Select a design or theme. Plan and consider possible items to display. Consider collectibles, antiques, hobbies or match the dcor of your kitchen. Gather items from around the house and check local stores for objects to fill in empty spaces.

    2

Measure the area. Use a ladder or a kitchen step ladder to measure the space on the top of the kitchen cabinets. Measure the width and length of the kitchen cabinets. Take note of ridges on the cabinet tops. Determine the space from the top of the cabinets to the ceiling to ensure selected items fit. Notice if the cabinet tops are recessed, which hides the bottom of your items. Extra height will be required for the items to be seen.

    3

Determine locations. Consider favorite wine bottles, bowls and trays, dried flowers, wine crates, decanters or vases and wine corks for a Tuscany theme. Place items on the kitchen counter to determine locations. This saves extra trips up and down on the ladder. Intermix items so all the bowls aren't next to each other or all the wine bottles don't appear in one section. Try grouping two or three wine bottle together in a section. Try to evenly space out bowls, trays and platters.

    4

Place items on kitchen cabinet tops. Start at one end of the cabinets and carefully place items. Position the largest items first. Place taller items toward the back of the cabinet tops to add depth. Consider using pieces of wood or Styrofoam to add height to some items. Use plate stands to positions trays, bowls and platters. Put wine corks in a clear vase for display. Make sure all items are stable before stepping down.

    5

Check if items can be seen by stepping down from the ladder from time to time. Look from various angles in the kitchen, ensuring all items are seen. Make sure items are at appropriate heights. Move any items or add height so they can be seen.

    6

Add grapevines or lights. Drape grapevines and grapes over the edge of the cabinets. Use putty or small tacks to hold the grapevines in place, if needed. Position extra grape clusters throughout the grapevines to add fullness. Consider mixing small white Christmas lights with the grapevines. This makes a dramatic statement in the evening.
