How to Cut a Formica Sheet

You've decided to recover your kitchen counters as a more affordable alternative to new ones, and have purchased the Formica and adhesive to install it. The problem you're facing now is how to cut the Formica. Cutting a sheet of Formica isn't too complicated. The key is having a hard, smooth surface to lay the sheet down on while you cut. Within minutes you'll have the Formica cut to size and be ready for the next stage of your project.

Instructions

    1

Unroll the sheet of Formica face up and weigh down the corners to keep it in place.

    2

Measure the sheet and mark your cutting line with a pencil.

    3

Cover the measuring marks with masking tape and mark a new line on the tape. Pencil marks on Formica will smear and the tape will insure the mark is visible while protecting the Formica from chipping during the process.

    4

Lay a straight edge along the cutting mark. Hold it tightly to the Formica with your left hand, with the open side of the straight edge facing the piece of Formica that will be discarded. Make sure your fingers and body are out of the cutting path.

    5

Draw the utility knife blade down the cutting line, using the straight edge for guidance with a firm, steady motion.

    6

Grasp the waste portion of the Formica and lift slightly. The waste portion will snap free. Move your hands down 2 feet and repeat the lifting motion until the piece is completely separated.
