How to Cut Kitchen Countertops

Cutting a kitchen countertop is the first step in installing a new countertop component, such as a kitchen sink. Cutting a kitchen countertop can be intimidating, especially when you are considering how to start the cut and how to complete it without damaging the remaining portion of the countertop.

Instructions

    1

Place the countertop on two sawhorses.

    2

Clamp the countertop to the sawhorses.

    3

Drill a 1/2-inch hole through the countertop using an electric drill equipped with a spade bit. The hole must be cut into the portion of the countertop that is to be removed. The hole will act as an access point for the saw blade.

    4

Equip a saber saw with a laminate blade. This type of blade is specifically equipped to minimize chipping the portion of the countertop that is not being cut out.

    5

Place a piece of wood or some other object underneath the portion of the countertop you want to remove. The object should rest securely under that portion of the countertop. Supporting the countertop in this way will prevent it from breaking under the weight of the portion that is being removed.

    6

Insert the saber-saw blade into the 1/2-inch hole, then begin the cut.
