How to Tile a Countertop Edge

Installing tile to any countertop is a sure way to add a little value to your home while also updating its decor. Choosing to use tile on your countertops as opposed to installing a slab of the material you are using can save you hundreds, and potentially thousands, of dollars. For a streamlined and professional look, tile the edges of your countertops.

Instructions

    1

Cut the tiles to fit along the edge of the counter.

    2

Measure the width of your countertop edge. Most edges will be approximately 2 inches wide.

    3

Cut strips to fit along the edge with a tile cutter or tile saw, depending on the material your tiles are made from.

    4

Apply thin-set mortar along the edge of your countertop with a notched trowel. Apply in small areas so the thin-set does not dry before getting all of your tile strips put in place.

    5

Wiggle the tiles onto the edges to make sure they are fastened to the thin-set. For a streamlined and professional look, it is recommended to align the edging tiles with the countertop tiles while using the same width spacers between each tile.

    6

Use painter's tape to help hold the edging tiles in place. Remove the plastic spacers after a couple hours. Allow 24 hours for the thin-set to dry.

    7

Remove the tape and apply grout between tiles with a rubber float, working the grout into every nook and cranny. Use a damp sponge to wipe away excess grout from the tile surface. Allow another 24 hours for the grout to dry.
