How to Stain Concrete Countertops With Iron Sulfate

Staining your concrete countertops is a cost-effective way to turn dull gray concrete into something sleek and elegant. It can revitalize a kitchen without breaking the bank. Traditional concrete staining is done with acid, but if you'd rather not deal with harmful chemicals, there is a safer "green" alternative; iron sulfate. Not only does it grow great tomatoes, but it can also give dull concrete counters a much needed facelift.

Instructions

Mix 1 lb. iron sulfate with water in a large bucket. Keep stirring this periodically, as iron sulfate tends to settle to the bottom.

Wet the concrete countertops thoroughly with clean water.

Tape off any areas that you don't want to stain, such as wood molding.

Apply the mixture to the countertops with a clean cloth or paintbrush.

Allow the first coat to dry. Apply at least two more coats, wetting the countertops with clean water before each coat.

Allow the countertops to dry completely overnight.

Rinse the countertops one last time and allow to air-dry.
