How to Design a Window Seat

How to Design a Window Seat

A window seat is a way to add additional seating, storage or create a cozy nook to get away from it all. These can easily be added to any room that has a window. In designing a window seat for your home, you'll want to think about if you have enough space, how you want it to look and what it will add to your home.

Instructions

    1

Determine what your intention is for designing a window seat. Will it provide extra seating? Is it being made to enhance the aesthetics of a room? Do you want storage? These important questions help provide the key elements designing a seat for your needs.

    2

With a measuring tape, measure the height from the base of the floor to the sill of the window. Make sure to write all measurements down on paper. Once measured, you can determine if you have room to place a seat underneath the window. If you are designing this seat for additional seating, the top of the seat will need to be around 17 to 19 inches. This will make it comfortable for the average adult. Depending on what the seat's function will be, you can use the height from the bottom of the sill to determine the height of your seat.

    3

If you want storage, you must decide how you want to access your things. The two options are from a hinged top that opens up, or from the front (below the seat). It is best to use top storage for items that you do not need often, as continually accessing them will mean moving any cushions, pillows or other things that you have resting on the seat. If you have your storage from the front, you can place shelves for books, or create doors to hide items, similar to a cabinet.

    4

The width of the seat can vary. The width should be at least 16 inches. You can increase the width if you have space to do so. Make sure you have enough room for circulation around the seat.

    5

Determine the length of the seat for the final overall dimension. Using the length of the window where the seat will be located is a good way to decide. Measure this using the tape measure. If the window is in a cove, be sure to measure and write down the length and width. It can be aesthetically better to fit the seat within those dimensions.

    6

Use the dimensions that you wrote down to see the overall size of your window seat (length x width x height). Now you can decide the final look that fits best with your home.
