Ceramic tile can be a great investment for any indoor location. When proper care is taken, it is durable and maintains its original appearance for many years. In order for this to be the case, preventative measures must be taken regularly. If not cared for properly, ceramic tile can break and stain. Keeping the grout around each tile clean is also an important aspect of the cleaning process to avoid a dirty, worn-out look.
Sweeping
When cleaning a ceramic tile floor, sweep the floor regularly, as dirt easily adheres to the surface of ceramic tile. This is especially true if the tile's surface has any kind of texture on it. If you use a vacuum cleaner to sweep, be sure that it will not dull and scratch the tile.
Using walk-off mats to reduce the amount of dirt being tracked in through entryways is a good preventative cleaning measure for ceramic tile floors.
Washing Ceramic Tile
Ceramic tile should be wiped with a damp cloth or mop on a regular basis to keep it clean. Use a mild detergent and a sponge or aabrasive-free cloth when washing and scrubbing. If the tile is textured, a soft brush may be a necessity. Sometimes an electric polisher can be used. Always rinse thoroughly when you have removed all the dirt. Wipe the tile dry in order to remove any possible film.
What to Avoid
Never use steel wool on any ceramic tiles. Also avoid scouring powder or other abrasive cleaning detergent. They will scrape the surface of your ceramic tile and make it more difficult to clean in the future because dirt will cake into the tile more readily. Bleach or ammonia-based cleaners will discolor the grout around your ceramic tile and create a permanently dirty appearance. If the tile is covered with any kind of glaze, do not use an oil-based cleaning solution. Try not to allow any spills to sit for too long upon your ceramic tile because these might stain the tile and/or the grout.
